Wizard Land!

Wizard Land

Rating out of five:

★★★

+ Pretty graphics, especially in the menu and achievements areas
+ Three modes of play in one makes for interesting strategic choices
+ Plenty to think about and a stiff challenge on each level
– Feels unexciting, a little too slow-paced

Wizard Land is an interesting Match 3 concept because it allows you to switch game modes in the middle of a level. That's about the most remarkable feature, though.

You have to (for some no doubt noble reason) clear levels by matching gems. As in all Match 3 games these days, some gems are encased in concrete, boxed, or chained and must be matched multiple times before you can free them.

Clear all these special tile backgrounds and a key appears. You must move it along the path to the lock to complete the level. Interestingly, you'll have to rotate the entire playing field when the key reaches a corner of the path to keep it following gravity.

The rotating field is just one innovation. You'll be able to switch from play mode to play mode as you go. Play modes are SWAP (click a gem and move it to an adjacent square), CHAIN (click a gem and drag along a connected path of similar gems) and GROUP (click to explode a group, like in Super Collapse).

Levels can take a considerable time to clear. You have two magic tools to help you though: SHUFFLE (which does what it says) and MEGA BONUS, which blasts a magic lightning to clear random tiles.

Clearing bigger than usual lines or groups creates exploding gems and other powerful tiles. And if that's all sounding familiar and welcome, you're going to like Wizard Land. If it sounds samey and dull, look elsewhere.
