The original Westward real-time strategy has dated, but its pure gameplay and strong challenge make it well worth considering.
Although this is an RTS, there are adventure elements too. The familiar task, of building up a town using local resources, will be meat and drink to all strategy games fans.
You can hire gunslingers to assist you, but the most important resources are gold, water and food. You'll also need to process trees into lumber for building.
Set up your buildings (creating jobs) and settlers appear, ready for work. Try to store up food ahead of the inevitable droughts and famines though.
