Merriam-Webster, yes, THE one that we know and love when it comes to checking anything on the English language, has put out a solid and enjoyable game that will challenge those with a love for words.
The graphics may seem to cater to the younger crowd, the words that players are challenged with are not for the elementary set. You can choose from Competition, Game Show or Practice modes, each of which has a very different feel.
Game Show is your basic mode, where you'll probably be most of the time when you're alone. You pick your difficulty level, but trying all three gives you a nice range of challenges over the course of the game.
Once you're on stage, ready to go, you get a word to spell. Onscreen you will see options for repeating a word, getting it put into a sentence, or hearing the origin of it. You can use the keyboard for speed or the onscreen click-keyboard. You also get the round stats and money meter in front of you.
The game saves after each series of ten words you get right. In total there are 100 words to spell in Game Show mode, but this can be quite a challenge.
Merriam Webster's Spell Jam is a straightforward spelling game that is great to teach you and your kids new words and refresh some of the old ones we often get wrong. It's a great workout for the brain, so go ahead, challenge yourself!
