Dam Beavers is an original and entertaining word game that has you battling bad-guy beavers and catapulting words at their damned nuisance dams. It has great power-ups and gets increasingly challenging quite quickly.

You are Quax, a frustrated duck who's lost his well-loved swimming hole to a bunch of beaver bad-guys. They've constructed dozens of dams, but YOU have one-upped them. You have just made a killer catapult that can smash their damnable dams to pieces.

The dams are made of logs with letters on them, and you get a 24-letter grid to work with. You can build words by clicking on the letters in succession. The rarer the letters you use, like j, k, z, and q, the more damage it does to the dam. You then launch the word catapult and watch as it crashes into the dam. Who knew word games could be so cool and action-packed??

The entire time you're thinking up words, you have mean-looking beavers sneaking over and attacking the catapult. You can scare them away by clicking on them. Every few levels you get to face the big bad villain in the Boss Battles. He causes a lot damage by spinning or stomping down hard. You have to get rid of the damaged logs by moving them to the bottom and out of the grid.

I liked the power-ups. You have repair, dynamite, and shield power-ups, which are pretty straight forward. The 'wild' power-up acts like a blank tile in Scrabble; it can be any letter in the alphabet. If you use a letter with the bee symbol, a swarm of angry bees comes to help you and attacks the beavers.

Some obstacles consist of damaged logs, or petrified ones, where you build words with letters adjacent to them to unlock them.

Once the power-ups and obstacles start piling up the trick is to keep your wits and concentration and keep building good words. It can get pretty hard just to concentrate with everything that's going on. But I never found it too stressful. You really ARE playing against yourself, to keep up your own word quality standards.

Dam Beavers is a fun game that I found enjoyable and relaxing, and it did pack a punch. It is only as challenging as you make it; stick to basic, three-letter words and there's not much to worry about. But if you set yourself some big word goals, you'll find your brain working overtime to keep up.
