The Last Airbender game comes out at exactly the same time as the movie. I was excited when I saw the RPG top-down graphics system, but ultimately there are disappointments, as so often seems to be the case with TV and movie spin-off games.

In roleplaying game terms, your party is a fairly classic mix of "spellcasters" and fighters, though in reality everybody hits people. Or at least, they do it from a distance. The game is turn-based, and at the start of your turns, you have a "deck" of cards at the bottom of the screen. Clicking a card activates a template to show you where you can move and who you can affect with the attack.

The actual impact of each attack takes place on a separate, side-on screen which resembles the 1980s fighting games like International Karate. This is rendered disappointing by the static nature of the characters: they make a move, the attack is shown, the power bar decreases, but the enemy might as well be a statue for all the impact it seems to have. Even if the bar is reduced to zero, you have to wait until you switch back to top-down mode to see the enemy fall and vanish.

You earn training points (TPs) for clearing a level, even if that means sneaking out rather than fighting your way through hoardes of opponents. The better you do on a level, the more TPs you get. TPs may be exchanged for new cards in the training camp; these will then be available for your next combat rounds.

One of the truly silly elements of this game is the movement during the turn-based mode. You have to activate cards to move, even if there are no enemies within reasonable range. Okay, you get used to it, but a regular movement option would have made more sense and kept things flowing more. You'll have to click-move, click-move your Avatar.

The Last Airbender game is a decent RPG, that could have been so much better. It's well worth getting it FREE from GameHouse to try it for yourself.
